Yar-Har!

Cervantes was revealed as a returning character in Namco Bandai's Soulcalibur V a couple of weeks ago, super excited for the game now. His new look is a little more regal and flamboyant than his older outfits but I don't mind. I like his new color scheme for sure. I hope his golden mask of awesomeness returns too, most likely in his 2P outfit or part of the character creation costume pieces.

Well, I haven't done this in a while. I'm talking about actually using a real pen and pencil to draw out my lines. As a part of my research for an upcoming long-term project, I signed up for a free online game called "Dragon Nest" because the art style features chibi-like characters. The chibi proportions is something I am not used to drawing so I thought it was a good place to start since I liked the game's art style. I did the lines during Drink 'n Draw last week, I'll probably use the 'ol pen and pencil more in future pieces.

My third template for a Superman redesign. *gasp* It's a cape-deficient version! It was fun to explore, but I'm not sure that Superman can be Superman without his cape, no matter how useless it is hahaha. I do like the super huge chest emblem though, so I may play with that with future designs. I like the color scheme for #4 on the left, but it reminds me of Captain cold or Quicksilver.

This is my second template for a Superman Redesign project and I'm stiiill undecided about the chest emblem. This design is a little busier than the 1st template I made but I sorta liked the medallion studs on his cape, I thought it classed him up a little but ultimately he does not need it haha. For #4 on the right, I made his bodysuit primarily black because I was reminded by the Return of Superman outfit he wore when he...well...returned from the dead...with his mullet. I'll clean up another rough so I can play around with the colors so look forward to that!

This is the template that I favored over the rest, although I'm still undecided about his chest emblem. I still plan on cleaning up some of the other rough designs I had made to see if they would work better than this one. I think by introducing some flat blacks on his costume, it made Superman look bolder and intimidating...almost oppressive, an idea that's been explored before I'm sure, but I just love the idea of Superman being SUPER intimidating even though he's a little goody-goody. I'm still on the fence about the "Yellows" on his costume, weather I should keep them yellow or a metallic gold instead.

My designs for a Superman redesign. For all of these I kept the Red, Blue, Yellow(Gold!) color scheme of the original, but I also started playing with a more grayish blue and some black. I prefer the older (age-wise) Superman look that Alex Ross created for the Kingdom Come comic book and the Superman design for Batman Beyond so I borrowed from them in terms of the face and head. I still have about 5 days so I may explore more color schemes. As for the design itself, I think #8 is my winner, although I'm still liking 1 and 2's chest emblem.

The first one on the left was inspired by a spider's maw/ fangs. The middle one incorporates the spider's head and front two legs. The third one just has a goddamn spider plastered onto his face, and the red chromey area is where he can see...somehow.

I was working on this today for a while, then out of the blue I realized it's not something I would want really finish. So I stopped mid way, and decided to work on other original characters of mine, but nothing was coming out. It was pretty frustrating, then I went to the gym, came home and showered. Nice and fresh, I decided to take another stab at whipping something out for my original characters but I got nothing but a massive brain fart. I was going to go play some games to cool off, but I remembered that Project Rooftop was hosting a Spider-Man redesign contest. I worked on some concept sketches for Spider-Man instead and now I feel a lot better.

Juri Han, Capcom's first Korean (that I know of) Taekwondo Street Fighter. It surprised me since her design is so wild, because when I think of Capcom characters, I see them as iconic but also too "safe" in terms of their design. Kudos to the designers for making her evil (or rather bat-shit crazy) since pretty much all of the Taekwondo fighters I can think of from any game are always straight up good guys. So to sum it up, while she would look more at home in an SNK game, I'm glad that she's instead gracing Street Fighter's roster as she just adds a nice uniquely evil flavor of wildness to the game.

It would be criminal for me to draw Bass Armstrong and not draw his unofficial partner in crime, the awesomely bearded Xinyi Liuhe Quan master: Gen-Fu. He was the other half of my Dead or Alive team alongside Bass since both characters can deal massive amounts of damage and thrive on exploiting missed attacks by their opponents. More importantly, he can sit and throw his hat mid-game, just for the hell of it. I thought that was stylish!

I've been playing a game by Trion Worlds called Rift for the past couple of months and here is my rendition of my in-game character whom I named "Myrmidon" for some reason. I really enjoy the game especially because there is a warrior class called the Beastmaster that can have an animal companion. But unfortunately ever since I hit the max level, having an animal companion with you is not as good as it should be. So out of nostalgia I drew this sketch which I plan on completing in the following days. Hopefully the the developers will look into re-balancing and fixing the Beastmaster so that I can start using my pet cat again.

My first attempt at my Mazinger Z piece. He's using his double rocket punch attack. But I wasn't feeling it...

...so I made a second sketch with a more dynamic pose but I still didn't quite like it.

For my third attempt I tried a different special move, which is Mazinger Z's Breast Fire. But instead of drawing the beams, I thought it'd be interesting to just see him about to fire it with all the laser build-up.

Hmm, it's kinda fun doing layouts even though my brain is still trying to grasp the ins and outs of Illustrator.

For this project we were to create a CD album of a band, fictional or not. I chose to do High and Mighty Color, one of my favorite bands. I felt a little sad since they disbanded last year though, but still thankful to Poseidon that I saw them in concert at last year's Sakura-Con as it was sure to be their last performance as a band in the U.S. Once again I am up late. I was doing so well too, but looks like I have to try to get my sleep schedule in a somewhat more normal mode. I'm all done with my freelancing for a game company called Boostr and my artwork will be featured in their game called Urban Rivals, an international browser based card fighting game. I'm still waiting for an okay to debut my designs and final character arts on my websites.

So it's 6am, Jennie is probably about to wake up and here I am at the end of my assignment for my Drawing for Animation II class. We were tasked on creating characters from a treatment of "Sinbad And The Wizard's Heart". At first my initial designs we're pretty close to the material, but then I watched the trailer to Deus Ex: Human Revolution for the 200th time and I said to myself, "You know what this Sinbad story need? F-ing bio-mechanical arms that have swords in them!" And lo you see with your eyes the awesomeness that I created. Beard. Check. Hairy chest. Check. F-ing Bio-mechanical arm with retractable blade. Check! Check! Check! I was also listening to the Overclock Remix of Xenogears music while watching Rob Duenas, one of my favorite artists do a livestream, so I was basically running on creativity. I decided to place this story in the far FAR FAAAR future where technological stuffs like gadgets and such are regarded as ancient relics submerged in a great flood. Sinbad the Sailor had humble beginnings but ended up becoming wealthy and influencial due to his business, and his business is going out to sea and retrieving these ancient relics. It may be a little cliche but I just couldn't help myself, I just saw the Deus EX trailer and been listening to Xenogears music, can you really blame me. I should sleep...*totters off*

Well I'm getting the hang of jogging daily, it's pretty nice as it gets the blood pumping all over the body and I feel more flexible when sitting down and drawing all day. In my imaging foundations class we are using Illustrator for the first half and I hated the pen tool, but I think it was just because I didn't really know how to use it. I'm still often times confused by it but I can definitely respect it's value as a tool. Other than that I'm seeing a career counselor on the 31st to see what it is that I am doing wrong regarding me securing a stable job. Speaking of which, I was contacted by a creative director from a company called 'Boostr' they made the game "Urban Rivals", maybe something good will come out of this. Other than that I'm trying to finish some HW due tomorrow and 2 art contest entries that are due by the end of the month. So good luck me!

Here's a teaser pic for my Megaman Tribute piece, the piece as a whole is still a work in progress. I tied it in with my Imaging Foundations class HW in which we were to scan in a sketch and gussy it up using Adobe Illustrator, sadly it's a program I am not as proficient with compared to my Photoshop skills so there was a lot of fumbling around with the pen tool just to get a curve looking correct. As painful as it was, I can definitely see the value of the pen tool as my skill grow in Illustrator. I was also totally rocking out with the Megaman Overclock Remix Soundtrack.

This is the scanned sketch that I made. The final piece will definitely include Roll in it.

Katana from the DC universe. She apparently wields a Katana...hence her name. When she debuted in 1983 she was totally rockin' the Ms. Swan haircut. She's Japanese but her Gold and Red color scheme reminds me of China or Vietnam. I modified the look of her costume slightly to better suit my aesthetic tastes.

Mah arm!!!

Kazuya Mishima from Namco's fighting game series Tekken and winner of my "Furious Fathers" poll in my DeviantArt. He was the protagonist of the first Tekken game. His primary costume was a lack of shirt and torn up karate pants which I think made people write him off as another mysterious wandering warrior archetype. But when one dives more into the personality and drive of Kazuya as a character, there's more to him than just being some mass produced Ryu wanna-be. Kazuya as a character underwent quite a journey since his inception as he started out as a protagonist, then into an antagonist, then into an anti-hero. His father, Heihachi threw him off a cliff when he was a child, proclaiming that a true Mishima would climb back up. Kazuya barely survives and makes a deal with the devil. Years pass and father and son finally have their fated duel resulting with Kazuya gaining the upper hand and finally taking over his father's company. The devil gene which had remained dormant since he was a child soon rears its ugly head and all shit breaks loose. At one point he conceived a son with Jun Kazama thus making him a furious father.

I really like his tuxedo outfit from Tekken 2 (I think) so I decided to go with that design. I see him as someone who is ruthlessly efficient, no hoity-toity fancy fighting moves (though he kinda has some), just moves that will fuck your shit up so I decided to pose him simply standing and letting the Devil within him do its thing.

Well, well! Happy New Year to all of you! I've been desperately trying to claw myself out of vacation-mode during the past two days, it seems to be working so I'm not too worried. School started yesterday so I'm kinda excited for that. I cleaned the house today, especially the kitchen which was left messy during Jennie's absence as I had reverted back into some sort of bachelor-mode while she was off sipping wine in frisco. It was kinda interesting as I had not lived as a complete slob in such a long time (just as a partial one nowadays), and boy was the aftermath pretty awful, I pray to Poseidon that I don't revert into such a thing ever again.
It's icy here in Washington, like not bullshit ice either, this shit's serious. Since we got cable I've not watched the local news, but I'm sure when it first iced up, cars were sliding and hitting each other like a Twisted Metal meets air hockey sort of thing. Also, I'm being thoroughly entertained by the people with rear-wheel drive high powered sport cars trying to go up the iced-up hill right next to my house.

This year I plan to try to do more 3D stuff. I'd been playing around with ZBrush and it's pretty cool, I hope to create some work worth posting sometime soon. I'm also going to be brushing up on my low-poly models. I'm also planning a beginning of the year super artwork level up piece that should take a couple of weeks to finish.

Oh boy, where to start with this guy. I'm not a fan of space marine-type characters that are NOT Space Marines from Warhammer 40k. I also HATE soul patches and characters with zero personality and lazy bloop-blop lights that serves no purpose garnishing the armor like radioactive pizza toppings. So I am not a big fan of Fenix's design, although I was a fan of the game. I thought it was at least fun, and chainsaw guns are awesome.

Hanged out with my friend again today to Monster Hunter it up. Such a damn addictive game. My PSP analog stick got stuck in the downward position but I fixed it, thank Poseidon, I would go crazy if I can't play Monster Hunter is what I feel like. I wonder what makes it so addicting, the Graphics aren't that great, the storyline is...what storyline? Well I guess to answer my own question, it's probably the combination of gameplay mechanics and the social factor. Sure you can trudge around with a Greatsword in hand throughout the land of Monster Hunter alone, but one is a lonely number, it's when you're out hunting with 3 of your friends is when the game shines. We are of course playing the Japanese version at the moment since the US localized game will probably not be out until August next year, but I'm actually proud to say I can decipher SOME of the hiragana and katakana and make sense of some of the menu text, the Kanji however is a different story. I was actually spending some time looking up translations for it and I was like "Screw this, I'd rather be killing stuff." so I did.

Had a fun and productive day today. Used the Furminator™ on the cats, did the dishes, played some Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on my PSP, and sketched out my entry for the art contest hosted by Udon for the upcoming Megaman Tribute art book. The girlfriend is shaking her bon-bons at her zoomba/ zumba? class at the moment, so I need to capitalize on the free time before she comes home. I got an A on all of my classes this semester so I'm quite happy with that since I worked my ass off, but more importantly, all the things I learned we're actually absorbed into my brain, which warrants a final fantasy victory theme song. What to do tonight? Probably cooking for Jennie's lunch, followed by more Megaman drawings and possibly some Monster Hunter. Also, I'm going to visit the family in Las Vegas on Christmas, totally looking to the food---erm, I mean seeing my beloved family.

Tomorrow, technically later this morning, I'm going to hang out with an old friend of mine and probably burn most of the day playing Gran Turismo. The fact that I made plans to get out of the house and have some fun makes me feel a little guilty and want to cram as much drawing as I can before the morning. Could it be that subconsciously, drawing outweighs having contact with friends? Sometimes it seems like it, and I don't know how to feel about that. Once this post is through I will chug another bottle of Neuro-Sleep to help me K.O. About 3 years ago I bought a chair for my workstation, flash-forward to now and I wish I had spent the extra $60 for the clearly more padded and awesome-er chair. I literally spend all day and night sitting at my workstation. The younger me would've been playing videogames at said workstation but instead I draw draw draw and draw some 'mo. Sometimes I find it hard to stop, hence my lack of sleep, hence my reliance on bottled chemicals to help me sleep. Though one (well, maybe just me) can appreciate my recent burst of creativity and artistic stamina, I believe it's sustained by many things other than just the nicer nobler once like the need to create or having a strong passion to about art; sometimes the darker elements become evident: self-doubt, my obsessive drive to improve, and pathetically, the feeling of inadequacy that leads to self-pity. True, I am unemployed at the moment, and most art related jobs I've applied for have been struck down, the thought about the limitations of my skills have crossed my mind many times, the younger me (by a couple of years) would be in self-pity mode right away. But as I am today, for the most part, think that when you have time to have self-pity, you've got time to draw, draw, and draw some more, until you draw all of you bad drawings out so that all that's left are the good. I've been adhering to that thought process for a while now, only realizing now that it could also be a double-edge sword because of the way I think. Right now, it feels like everything is blurring together, I sometimes can't tell if it's still the feeling of inadequacy that is fueling my drawing marathons or perhaps this is just how I am now, a sleepless drawing robot.

Now that school is done (for now), I've been spending my time working on personal pieces as well as focusing on job hunting and tidying up the house. One of my professors were impressed with my work so I emailed him if he knew any place that may be hiring right now. But as usual, I'm roaming around Animation World Network and Gamasutra and also Monster and NWJobs for backup work cause I need to get some income flowing.

Countess Isabella "Ivy" Valentine Rough

I finally have time to work on her. Ivy is my favorite female Soul Calibur character due to her imposingly elegant fighting-style. When Soul Calibur came out for the Sega Dreamcast, Ivy stood out because of her fighting-style in which she can transform her seemingly short sword into a segmented bladed whip thus increasing it's attack range.

As for her outfits, I think when she was first introduced, her default costume was alright, it was definitely there for fanservice as it was basically a dominatrix outfit with some armor pieces here and there. I am, however, a big fan of her alternate outfits, including the very masculine looking navy uniform, and especially the ultra-classy Tudor Rose themed silkwear she wore in Soul Calibur III, it was elegant and instead of making her look like a flat-out dominatrix, she looks like a noblewoman with a darker side; it was a little (compared to her 1P Costume) subtler but still very sexy. I based this costume on her Soul Calibur III outfit. Continuing with the Tudor Rose theme and adding some baroque elements like the silver vines that cup her breasts and entwine her arms.
